Diversity in team building
Leaders are often faced with the big challenge of turning a group into an effective team. Groups can be very diverse and complex but the bottom line is competency and skills which are necessary for accomplishing projects and tasks. An effective team must meet the desired goals and produce desirable outcomes. Basically, a team can be defined as a small group of people whose skills complement each other towards attaining a common purpose (Manning, 2009). This paper will discuss the essence of diversity in teamwork and development of diverse teams.
The performance of a team is dependent on goals and the approach that is held mutually accountable for all members. Therefore, embracing diversity in building competent teams can be beneficial for leaders who want their teams to produce the desired outcomes. Teams should include members with varying capabilities, meaning that gender should not obstruct the achievement of this goal. To bring in more collaborative and empathic skills to a team, there is need to bring in people from both sexes. In fact, the more the complexity of the problem faced by a team, the more the need to embrace diversity in terms of personality and experience. In this regard therefore, different approaches to solving problems should require people from different backgrounds and origins (HOLLAND, 2007).
