Synchronous and asynchronous

In networking, communication circuits operate on the physical and data link layers of the OS Model. The two strategies used in signal transmission are synchronous and asynchronous transmission methods. Each of the method has its benefits and detriments. Synchronous communication is achieved in the data link layer whereby the communication system synchronizes both internal and external clocks before initiation any transmission. Numeric counters are reset for error correction and compression in advanced synchronous systems. Moreover, it is possible to achieve synchronization in both sides of the communication system at the same time. There is a distinct process that is responsible for choosing the side that will take control of the communication link. Nevertheless both sides undergo long negotiation cycles to exchange communication parameters before communication begins. On the other hand, asynchronous communication does not rely on coordination between the two end points of a communication system. The transmitting system simply transmits its signal (Dewan, 2006). The receiver then receives the incoming signal and retimes its clock to match that of the received signal.
