The Pacific Settlement Boarder of the Dispute

Introduction

If there is a reason that has replicated itself as being among the causes of interstate wars, dispute or disagreements, then it is that of boundary disputes. Africa and other continents are replete with pertinent cases. That such disagreements are prolific in Africa is expressly indicated by the fact that no sooner had the people of South Sudan vote overwhelmingly (98.83%) for secession from North Sudan on 9th– 15th January 2011 than the latter start launching military offensive over the Abyei region which borders the two countries. As far as old cases go, the dispute over the Bakassi Peninsula between Cameroon and Nigeria serves as one of the most famous.

Background Information

Bakassi is the peninsular extension that joins Calabar to Atlantic Ocean in Africa.  At the moment, Bakassi is under the sovereignty of Cameroon since it was transferred from the neighbouring Nigeria, following an injunction by/ from the International Court of Justice (ICJ)[1]. To show for the extent (that) the dispute generated tension between the two countries, the two countries almost went to war in 1981. The situation was not made any better by the presence of Lake Chad which also was the bone of contention, given that it stood between the borders of the two countries. It is following the verdict that was issued by the ICJ on October 10th   2002 that light seemed to shine at the end of the tunnel which was the diplomatic standoff. The ruling was based on the Anglo German agreements.
