Contribution of Nurses to the Nursing Profession
How I See Myself Contributing to the Nursing Profession
Nurses play a significant role in the healthcare sector by providing care services and collaborating with other professionals to ensure optimal service delivery. Primarily, nurses offer care to patients, engage in health education, promote healthy lifestyles, and advocate for health equity. These roles are some of the ways through which nurses contribute to the nursing profession. My desire is to see progress and development in the nursing profession. I believe I can contribute to the nursing profession in various ways as discussed below.
One of the ways I see myself contributing to the nursing profession is through improvement of patient care. Nurses have the responsibility of improving patient care and outcomes. Consequently, nurses often provide care based on individual preferences, needs, and abilities. Improvement of patient care requires coordination of care across various settings and providers. Some of the strategies I believe will be important in improving patient care include prioritizing patient safety, effective communication, and collaborating with other health professionals. Employing these strategies will be critical in fostering patient-centeredness, improved outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
Another area I see myself contributing to the nursing profession is through evidence-based practice. Specifically, I intend to engage in research work touching on various issues within the nursing profession. Essentially, I will constantly engage in identifying gaps in research or knowledge, formulating questions, and conducting literature reviews. Additionally, I will collect data, analyze the information gathered, and draw generalizations based on the findings. The new knowledge derived as a result of my research will be helpful in ensuring that patients are offered high-quality care. I also believe that the new information obtained from my research will aid in improving nursing practice. Therefore, evidence-based practice will be vital in improving patient care and outcomes as well as enhancing patient satisfaction.
Healthcare promotion is another way I will be able to contribute to the nursing profession. Lifestyle diseases have become common in various communities and societies. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the major causes of lifestyle diseases such as heart diseases and cancer (Park et al., 2020). Awareness needs to be created to ensure people adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent some of these diseases. Therefore, I will engage in health promotion by educating people about the need for adopting healthy foods, such as consumption of more vegetables and fruits and drinking more water. Further, I will educate people about the need for physical activity and its importance in eliminating some of the risk factors that lead to the onset of diseases. As a nurse, I will also teach people about the dangers of adopting certain lifestyles, such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and drug abuse. Through healthcare promotion, I will contribute to the nursing profession by ensuring that people adopt healthy lifestyles.
I also see myself contributing to the nursing profession by engaging in advocacy work. Nurses can engage in patient advocacy by creating awareness about health inequalities that exist in the society today (Godsey et al., 2020). Vulnerable groups, especially low-income households, have challenges accessing healthcare services. Additionally, migrant populations also face numerous challenges accessing healthcare services due to their immigration status. Poor people, immigrants, and minority groups are often confronted with difficulties getting treatment and the necessary services. As a result, disease burden and death are common among these groups. As a nurse, I will be able to advocate for healthcare equity by ensuring that vulnerable groups get access to healthcare and associated services and resources that guarantee their well-being.
