Should College Education be Free? Benefits and Drawbacks
Introduction
A college education is an integral part of the civilization cycle. It is fundamental to the skills of an individual to contribute to the social, economic, and technological needs of the society (Editors, 2016). Since a college education is a need for the nation, there are individuals who miss out on the opportunity to contribute to the building of the society. It comes through not being able to afford a college education, lack of policies to control the department, and also through overburdening of the citizens that pass through college through student loans. This paper supports and highlights the reasons why college education should be made free for all.
Benefits of Free Education
Varied arguments tend to explain the possibilities and impossibilities of a free college education. The importance of free college depends on the final result of the same. The main advantage is that it eases the pressure installed on students and, hence giving them the optimum environment to accomplish their academic goals. There are a number of students that have to work between jobs in order to achieve the funds that can help them pay tuition (Price, 2016).
Free education is important to the economy. This is because the costs of education are spread across different economic players (Editors, 2016). It means that a number of players are brought on board in order to foot the various costs and therefore contribute to the economy. It encourages people to participate in income-generating activities and therefore contribute differently to the economy..
Drawbacks
Funding free college requires a lot of public resources, which potentially leads to higher taxes or cuts in other services such as healthcare or infrastructure. Additionally, if more students enroll due to free tuition, universities may face overcrowding, larger class sizes and stretched resources. As a result, it can reduce the quality of education.
Conclusion
It is important that the government look into the possibility of free education. This is because society needs people that can contribute constantly to the generation of taxes as well as to the social and political will of the country. Free education encourages the contribution of a larger population to raise the funds to run schools as well as the education system. It also calls for more vigilance in the education sector, which leads to a rise in the standards of education. It has been proved to work, especially in providing more work opportunities.
