Wal-Mart is an American public company founded in 1962 by Sam Walton and was incorporated dates back to October 31, 1969. It is one of the biggest retail businesses in the globe operating discount stores and super centers worldwide. It is a giant company with 4081 stores in 14 countries outside the United States and employing about 2.1 million employees globally. Due to its size, Wal-Mart has managed to maintain a competitive edge for years over other similar businesses. With its large sales volume, the company has maintained its goal of keeping its prices low pushing most small retailers out of business and even forcing suppliers to reduce their prices. Manufacturers have been forced to scale up their production to deal with the immense demand created by Wal-Mart. Collectively these effects to the retail industry have come to be known as the Wal-Mart effect.
