Unhappy Performative

When we talk of “unhappy Performative” we refer to the unhappy ending of otherwise happy events or occurrences. For instance a marriage which started in very high spirit might end tragically or have a very unfortunate eventuality. For an event to qualify as an “unhappy Performative” there are a number of benchmarks’ called infelicities that we subject it to (Austin, & Sbina p.33). One such felicity is the degree of deviation from the standard procedure. For instance a weIDing ceremony that does not have the exchanging of vows fails in the first felicity (Austin, & Sbina p.36). Another felicity that we might consider in determining whether an event should be considered as unhappy Performative has to do with the procedure followed by participants subject to the standard procedures. We would also be assessing infelicities of an event if we are considering the intended feelings of the participants of a particular event, their behavior as compared to the expected behavior among other infelicities. In a nutshell we would be looking at infelicities in a bid to assess whether an event is unhappy Performative or not if we look at the procedures as compared to the standard procedure that is synonymous with that particular event.
