The Tragedy of Hamlet
In his tragic play Hamlet Shakespeare explores the theme of death. In most of his works Shakespeare depicts a likeable main character who suffers before tragically dying winning sympathy from the audience. In the tragic play Hamlet the Prince of Denmark is visited by his fatherÂ’s ghost and urged to revenge his death. His father the demised king was killed by his brother Claudius by being feed poison through the ears in order to mask his death and make it look like a natural death. He then took over as the new king and married Queen Gertrude who was his brotherÂ’s bride. When he reveals himself to hamlet the slain king demands that Hamlet avenge his deceitful death.
Through out the play prince Hamlet has had to deal with deaths making death one of the powerful themes in the play. It is for the same reason that in the entire play Shakespeare had the prince dressed in mourning clothes to signify the presence of death. The prince first has to deal with the demise of his father. The he accidentally slays Polonius who is sent by the king and the queen to spy on prince Hamlet. This in turn drives Polonius daughter Ophelia to madness which leads to her committing suicide. Ophelia is incidentally the prince love interest in the tragedy. It is at this point that the treacherous king Claudius concocts a plan to eliminate the prince by sending him to England on a diplomatic mission. The plan miserably fails leading to the demise of the kings co-conspirators Guildenstern and Rosencrantz. The play ends with more death when the king tries again to eliminate the prince by staging a fencing duel between the prince Hamlet and OpheliaÂ’s brother Laertes.
