The death penalty
Topic: The death penalty
Introduction
One of the most contentious issues in the modern world concerns the acceptability of the death penalty. The death penalty is still exercised in many areas as a punishment for heinous crimes especially murder. Communities from the Europe and North America embrace the death penalty as a suitable punishment methodology. However, pertinent issues concerning capital punishment are unlikely to be resolved soon due to the different justifications given by the different sides. Some religious groups have criticized capital punishment as inhuman and uncivilized act. Yet within the same religious grouping the same punishment is seen as justifiable and deserved depending on the crimes being punished (Guernsey, 21). In other words there is no universally agreeable stand on the death sentence even among the same religious groups today which is where capital punishment raises so many controversies. Generally the major objectives of punishment that are meted out by the authority are firstly act as deterrence to crime. Punishments are also carried out in order to obtaining retribution for the victims and the general society. They are also used to incapacitate the offenders in order to ensure that they are rendered incapable of repeating their offences or to rehabilitation offenders. However the death sentence is permanent and irreversible and can not therefore be used to rehabilitate offendersÂ’ .It is hover capable of permanently incapacitating the offenders. Capital punishment as a means of retribution to the victims and those offended has however always been a debatable point and so has been the use of executions as means of crime deterrence. Therefore the controversies surrounding the issues of capital punishment as a means of punishing crime stem from the fundamental objectives of punishment. In order for the order to be maintained in any society it is clear that sanctions must be imposed on deviant behaviors or more appropriately those who deviate must be punished (Babbie 21). To what extent or the appropriate punishment has always been the question. The controversies surrounding capital punishment will not therefore be resolved in this century.
