SYMBOLS AND THEIR MEANINGS
Frogs feature prominently in different cultures. They mean different things to distinct cultures. There are there several fairy tales that are associated with the frog for instance, the frog prince. These creatures do not only feature in ancient fairy tales and folklore, but also in modern popular culture. In this paper different meanings attached to the frog will be discussed. Cultures that will be discussed in this paper include: Egypt, Chinese, Indochina, ancient Greece and Rome, South America, East Lancashire and Scotland.
Ancient Egyptian culture associated frogs with life and fertility. The frogsÂ’ population would rise once the Nile flooded. The flooding of the Nile would deposit fertile soils on lands that were considered to be barren. Land productivity would thus rise as the frog population rose (Fontana, 2004, pp44). Ancient Egyptians believed that flooding of the Nile was caused by frogs and from these they made gods and named them after popular frog species.
Ancient Romans and Greece associated frogs with harmony and fertility. Just like the Egyptians, the Greece and the people of Rome believed that their wealth had something to do with frogs (Fohr, 2006, pp58). When faced with hunger or famine, these two cultures could results to adoring god frogs for rescue. Families within these two cultures could invoke frogsÂ’ spirits once they felt that they are not living as harmoniously as they could.
