Summary

According to the July 1 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience, a study reveals that perceiving that others are in pain triggers and activates a part of the brain; the anterior cingulate cortex which is associated with emotions of empathy, more so if the observer is of the same race with the sufferer. The findings to the study reveal that the long term prejudices against external groups boil down to even into the most basic levels.

The study confirms an in-group lopsidedness bias and empathetic feelings which have all along been known, but not confirmed via the help of the neuro-imaging technology.  This research had been conducted since 1950s. As revealed by some studies, even those with similar backgrounds having been assigned to varying groups, showed preference to members of their own groups to outsiders. The crux of the study therefore shows that feelings of bias reflect in the brain cavity.
