Southwest airlines is an American lowest cost carrier and among the world’s low cost carrier. Its headquarters are located at Dallas love in Dallas, Texas. According to the 2009 statistics, southwest airlines carried the highest number of passengers not only in the United States but also globally. Among the world’s major airlines, southwest airlines company has the third largest fleet. By the end of 2009, this airline operated an average of 3,200 flights per day. Since 2006, the airline has been leading in terms of number of domestic and international passengers. Another important fact about this company is that it has posted profits for 37 consecutive years. Its model of success involves flying a series of short, quick trips into major markets using a single type of aircraft which is Boeing 37.

Southwest airlines have been in carrier business since 1967 but it has not always existed under this name. When Rollin King and Herb Kelleher formed this company, they called it Air Southwest and that was on March 15, 1967. During its first years in business, this airline served only three cities in Texas. Some of the major competitor airlines at the time were Aloha Airline, united airlines, Baniff airlines, continental airlines and Trans Texas airlines. Southwest airlines operated under the business name Air Southwest for only four years. In 1971 Herb Kelleher changed the former name to Southwest Airlines. Its first flight under the new name was on 18^th June 1971. This first flight was from its headquarters (Love Field, Dallas) to Houston. Since its inception, the airline has grown steadily not only in terms of size but also in terms of client base and performance of its stocks in the New York stock exchange. Today, it is the lowest cost carrier and most profitable airline in the United States where its headquarters are located.
