 Royal Dutch Shell in Nigeria

Question 1

The shell company in Nigeria has operated for many decades. The company however is faced with a number of risks that should be aIDressed to ensure that its operations in Nigeria do not come to an abrupt halt. The risks that the Shell Company faces in Nigeria include boycott of its products by the Nigerians. The Shell and to the extent the government of Nigeria has being criticized for violating fundamental human rights in Nigeria. In 1995, the government of Nigeria hanged 9 Nigeria civilians who criticized the Shell Company and the government of Nigeria. The action caused a public outcry not only in Nigeria but also in other places throughout the world (Hiatt, 2007). To quell the growing criticism because of the action of the government, the government and the Shell Company constituted a local tribunal meant to bring to justice the perpetrators of the murder. The act was seen as a public relation move to endear the company to the people and thus stop the outgrowing animosity of the Shell Company by the Nigerians (Michael, 2009).

Another risk that faces the Shell Company in Nigeria is that it is criticized for causing a wide-spread environmental degradation in Nigeria. The company has being criticized for oil-spills that affect the cash crops which are source of livelihood to Nigerians (Guides, 2009). According to Nigerians, the oil once it comes into contact with the cash crop, it dries immediately. According to Saro Wiwa; one of the person hanged as a result of criticizing the Shell Company, the extraction of natural gas in Nigeria causes the release of the carbon dioxide to the environment. Carbon dioxide is blamed for the global warming being experienced in the world. In fact he argued that Nigeria is responsible for releasing of more carbon dioxide that the rest of the world combined (Wiwa, 1995).
