Research projects leading to Belmont Report and the creation of IRB

The Belmont report was issued by the national commission for the protection of human subjects of medical and behavioral research in 1979. The Belmont report outlined various ethical practices that could be used in protecting the human subjects who were used in clinical research. The report outlined three basic principles under which any responsible research could be based upon.

Respect for persons

The report outlined the importance of individuals respect and autonomy in participating in the clinical research. It advocated for individuals to be treated in their own autonomy and choose if they are to participate in the research. Research based on individuals should be respected, and it should only be done if they are willing and the researcher must have their consent. According to the report, extra protection should be accorded to individuals who can not exercise their autonomy such as the children, prisoner and pregnant women among others (IRB Guide book, 2011).
