Reflective Analysis
The criminal justice system was put in place with the aim of dealing with deviant behaviors in the society. Essentially, the justice system was designed to promote order and guide people’s conducts and behaviors. Therefore, the system is supposed to protect victims, enforce the law, and ensure criminal behaviors are addressed accordingly. This justice system includes the courts, the police, and the prisons. This system was designed to be fair and not biased. However, this system is not perfect and is characterized by various challenges. This brings into question the issue of ethics in the criminal justice system. The materials covered in this course have been insightful and eye-opening. This reflective analysis reflects on the experience in criminal justice ethics and how the materials covered will benefit me in my future endeavors.
One of the topics covered in the course materials was leadership. Leadership is an important ethical issue in criminal justice. Leaders can influence the followers either positively or negatively. There are various leadership skills that leaders can employ. For instance, leaders can use transformational leadership in managing peers, colleagues or teams. Transformational leaders can inspire, motivate, and encourage the followers in an organization. This leadership approach can keep the followers engaged and productive in the organization. Another leadership style covered in this course was situational leadership. Situational leadership is where a leader employs an approach based on an emerging issue or situation. Situational leadership does not follow a systematic approach or criteria. The situation that is presented at a particular moment becomes the basis for using any style. Ideally, this method is flexible and the leader can tailor it to meet the needs and demands of the moment.
Through the materials covered in this course, I learned that leaders should be transparent. The framing of policies and procedures in an organization should be done transparently and openly. Additionally, leaders are supposed to be open when engaging with the followers. Transparency can foster trust and accountability in the organization. Further, I learned that leaders should also be accountable and avoid behaviors that make their followers to lose trust and faith in them. Therefore, leaders in criminal justice should conduct themselves in a manner that showcases ethical principles. The use of ethical principles in leadership can earn respect and trust from the followers.
The course materials also covered criminal justice ethics, which was one of the areas that captivated my attention. One of the ethical issues I learned was the principle of honesty. Those who work in the criminal justice system are supposed to be honest in the discharge of their duties. Honest means that the professionals are supposed to ensure a just and fair process when dealing with offenders. Additionally, I learned that integrity is a crucial aspect of the justice system. Professionals are supposed to uphold moral and professional values. Ideally, the actions of the professionals should be guided by integrity and the code of conduct. Consequently, individuals in the justice system are called upon to be objective. That means that they should avoid prejudice and bias. One of the key foundations of the justice system is that it should be fair. Therefore, the actions of the professionals should be impartial and defined by integrity.
Ethics in criminal justice also involves following due process. The justice system has specific procedures that should be followed, especially when dealing with offenders. This process is supposed to be defined by transparency and integrity. Therefore, I learned that professionals in this field should ensure that people go through the due process to promote fairness and justice.
Ethics in the justice system also involves law enforcement. The police have come under scrutiny in the recent past due to their actions when enforcing the law. The use of force remains one of the ethical concerns involving the police. Ethically, officers are supposed to engage individuals carefully by treating people with respect and dignity. Ideally, the police should always uphold the rights of the suspects in all circumstances (Goodman, 2013). Additionally, racial profiling is another ethical issue that is critical in the justice system. The materials covered in class elaborated on the need for impartiality to avoid false accusations or wrongful convictions. Policing should be based on respect for human rights and not engaging in practices that undermine justice and fairness. Ethical standards are important in fostering trust. Therefore, the police and those who enforce the law should be accountable and transparent.
The material covered in this course will benefit me to a greater extent in my future endeavors. First, the knowledge obtained from the course materials will be used to create a culture of ethical leadership. In the area of my assignment or placement, I will endeavor to promote accountability, fairness, and justice. Second, the course materials will help me to foster professionalism by ensuring personal responsibility and integrity. One of my desires is to become an astute professional in the criminal justice system. This will require me to employ a professional outlook in all my undertakings. Therefore, I will always be guided by the professional and ethical code of conduct.
The lessons drawn from the course materials will be helpful in promoting decision-making. The criminal justice system is always riddled with numerous controversies and ethical concerns. This course provided elaborate insights and knowledge on ethical issues and the conduct of professionals in the justice system. Consequently, the materials showcased various scenarios and application of ethical principles. Therefore, the lessons learned will help to come up with a framework of decision-making that will be critical in dealing with ethical dilemmas and challenging situations. Through the course materials I have learned that ethical dilemmas and concerns are varied in the criminal justice system. As a result, individuals are expected to be careful and mindful in their approach when dealing with offenders or criminals (Goodman, 2013). In the future, I will seek to foster justice, fairness, and equity to ensure that due process is the foundation in every case.
Another important area covered in this course was the media and the criminal justice system. I learned that media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion on various topical issues. Essentially, the media puts a spotlight on key issues that affect people’s lives either positively or negatively. Moreover, public opinion on criminal issues or concerns is shaped by the media. The way the media presents criminal issues play a vital role in shaping public opinion. In the future, I will work with organizations and the media to find solutions and formulate policies concerning areas such as community policing, racial profiling, and the use of force. These initiatives will be helpful in fostering a justice system that is based on trust, accountability, and transparency.
Conclusion
The materials covered in this course have provided invaluable insights, knowledge, and skills that will be helpful in my future professional endeavors. Specifically, the knowledge and skills obtained through the course materials will help me in decision-making, fostering a culture of ethics and enhanced professionalism. Moreover, the lessons learned will help me in promoting accountability, transparency, and integrity in my area of practice. The knowledge and skills from the course will also help in dealing with ethical dilemmas in the criminal justice system and the profession.
