Abstract

The proceeds of this paper will explore the ethical turn that old and new formats of reality television have taken. According to this paper TV in the modern society has become so deeply implicated in regard to shaping the ethical sensibilities of the society. However, the ethical turn that reality TV has taken stirs a lot of trouble explored in terms of moralism and the obsession which it has in the policing of what is considered between the right and the wrong. The argument presented in this article is built on the conception that when moralism creates way for ethics to be applied, the role that Reality TV plays in governing the society has been characterized by a lot of multifarious and complexities. The paper therefore explores whether there are any ethical application or consideration in the production of Reality TV especially ones that serve to draw profits from creating amusement in peoples, embarrassment, pains and sufferings.

On a global scale people have come to realize that the so called ‘reality TV shows’ have emerged as a very profitable scene which has in recent years contributed to a growing string of such kinds of shows (Essany, 2008). Though not all of the have turned out to be successful many have achieved a significant level of cultural prominence and popularity. This however does non mean that these shows are all good for social consumption. One thing that people should keep in mind is that ‘Reality TV’ is not a new scene. Reality TV dates back to the times of ‘Candid Camera’ in 1973 by Funt son. Originally this show showcased videos tat were hiIDen depicting people in all kinds of strange and unusual situations which maintained its popularity for many year (Essany, 2008). This is the trend that Reality TV has taken today. In today’s programming we are treated to variable and new version of ‘Candid Camera’ hence reality shows go back a long way in history.  Game shows such as, the fear factor, or wrestling have also came to be included as part of reality show.
