Public and Private Language by Richard Rodriguez

Introduction

By the phrase “Private language”, the author, Richard Rodriguez refers to the language that is used in the domestic or home setting. By this virtue, private language may therefore be synonymously referred to as the first or native language. On the other hand, “Public language” is used by Rodriguez to refer to the official language. As such, the language is used for learning, administrative and legal purposes, alongside social intercourse which may take place in public domains. The claim by Rodriguez that the selective exposure of children to private language shortchanges the same children is totally worthy of credence, as shall be seen forthwith.

First off, the selective and restrictive exposure of a child to private language is inevitably poised to bring up a socially disadvantaged child. This is because; the coexistence of the public and private languages implies strictly, the reality of a polyglot society. In a polyglot society, proficiency in the public language is needed. This is because the private languages are normally mutually unintelligible, so that the need for a lingua franca becomes irresistible and inevitable. It is this lingua franca which not only acts as the public language, but also the mode of communication in the public domains.
