Introduction

            Professionalism is a status that people acquire by a virtue of being professionals in certain fields of work.  As a concept, this word holds different meaning when applied in different fields of expertise due to the fact that it is held together by professionality. Professionality on the other hand is restricted to skills, procedures and knowledge that are found within a particular job or work. It follows then that professionalism will have varied meaning and its manner of application will also change as different scenarios are considered (Van Zandt, 1990).

Teaching is a profession that is quite demanding and sometimes it comes into direct conflict with what you know. According to the theory of progressivism, education and life are equals and not a preparation for living. On the same note, the interests of a child should be directly linked to the learning process (Sikorski, Niemiec & Walberg, 1994). In every profession, there are theories and models that govern it which therefore calls for the uttermost following in order to ensure success. Typically, the job of a teacher is to take students through a course with the eventual goal being success and good performance which should be a reflection of professionalism on the part of the teacher (Knowles & Holt-Reynolds, 1991). The theories that underpin education are on a collusion course with professionalism and trying to reconcile the two is a big problem. Professionalism dictates that you be in control and impact your knowledge on your students. A dilemma ensues whereby one has to balance between being a professional and a just a normal being. Disentangling the two (personality as a human being and professionalism) is a hard call which is energy consuming (Thomas, 1997).
