On How to Make Things Clea
On How to Make Things Clear was a paper published by Charles Pierce presenting a maxim which allowed the achievement of the highest grade of clarity about concept used in physical science. PierceÂ’s philosophy is widely celebrated for his account on pragmatism which later influenced the works of philosophers like William James, as they heavily borrow from his works. For William James, the chief virtue of the pragmatic account of the truth was that it made philosophy concrete. In his views, James considered pragmatism as a method that could be used to analyze philosophical problems and a theory of qualifying truth.
JamesÂ’ position reflected his early interest in physiology and psychology, and elaborated his insights in a long argument with Harvard colleague Royce, who formulated a less- individualistic doctrine called absolute pragmatism. Counting the emotional benefits of holding a belief to be true as part of the means of truth, James defended heartfelt spiritual creeds and PierceÂ’s calling his own views pragmatism, and thus disassociated himself from PierceÂ’s nontechnical theorizing. James had an international reputation, and his support assisted in the promulgation of his ideas by F.C. Schiller in England, Henri Bergson in France, and Giovanna Papini in Italy
