Nationalism and Romantisim
Thomas Moore is considered as one of the greatest romantic and nationalist Irish writer during his whole life time in London. As an Irish born citizen Thomas Moore claimed his great share of popularity through his poignant 1808-34 lyrics in ‘The Irish Melodies’ in aIDition to Lalla Rookh his 1817 exotic epic poem. Though almost his entire lifetime was spent in England, Moore always referred to himself as the first national writer of Ireland descent who gave all his devotion to the Irish national cause. He was also very active in speaking out on behalf of Ireland’s Catholic emerging community (Carruthers, 78). Modern critics have often relegated Thomas Moore’s name to the long list of English romantic and nationalistic writers, fellow poets have always held his poetry in very high regard. In fact Thomas Moore is credited as having had a very significant influence on other great writers and poets such as John Keats, Percy Bysshe and Lord Byron (Carruthers, pp 134). This paper is therefore going to devote it self to the exploration of Thomas Moore and his works as a romanticist and nationalistic writer. This will be in aIDition to the exploration of some of the critiques that have been directed towards him and his work. Despite the critics though, Thomas Moore can not be considered as anything else than one of the greatest Irish nationalist and romanticist writers of his time.
