Ganesha is an idol that is highly worshiped by the Hindu community. The other names used to refer to Ganesha are Vinayaka, Ganapati and Pillaiyar. Hindus worship him without considering the affiliation and therefore Ganeshas image is all over India. Worshiping Ganesha is very common and it goes even beyond India. He has many features which can be used to identify him but the mostly used is the presence of an elephants top. Ganesha is known as the master of Obstacles and also controller of first phases of events. He is known to eliminate obstacles when prayed to. He is also the supporter of art and science and also helps in acquiring knowledge and brainpower. He is always worshiped before important events and celebrations and also involved in letter writing. Ganesha is ranked among the five mostly worshiped deities in the Hindu denomination. He was recognized during the early centuries and had a lot of influence on Hindus. He inherited his characters and function from other gods who were present then. Group worshipers called Ganapatya recognized Ganesha as their highest god during the 9th century. The scriptures used to worship Ganesha are Ganesha Purana, Madgala Puruna and Ganapati Atharvashirs. (Kansakar, 1990)
