Introduction

Faulkner outlines the theme of loyalty, albeit using a dilemmatic situation; Sartoris has to choose between being loyal to the law or to his father and family. By choosing to defend the father and considering the other party against them as “enemies”, loyalty to family supersedes allegiance to law (p. 146). Being united as a family under one patriarch, Snopes, aIDs to the family theme with the author’s depiction of their unity. Snopes exhorts his son to always have his allegiance to the family against external influences from the society; he is admonished to “learn to stick by his own blood” (p. 146). The father’s authoritative manner is shown to as key in keeping the members huIDled together under him within the family. Family ties are important with the leadership the father providing the direction it takes as a unit; “even when they do not know where are going” (p. 147). The father-son relationship is vital in shaping the growth of the young boy and how he perceives things around him and situations.
