Infections among older adults

Infection is an important cause of illness and death among older adults. Infections also make other underlying illnesses worse, often leading to hospital stays that would not otherwise be needed. Choose the following to discuss at length:
• Factors that increase the risk of infection as patients age.
• Considerations in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in the older adult. Please include aspects of prevention in this discussion.
• Infectious syndromes that place the older adult at serious risk of illness or death.
