Egoism is a direct opposite of altruism and each contradict the perspectives and notions advanced by the other. Egoism and altruism give different perspectives on the same issue or concern. An egoist will provide an outlook albeit based on a selfish nature. At the same time, both the egoist and the altruist would perform a similar act, which may outwardly seem indistinguishable. However, of note is the fact that the underlying intentions and perspective of giving separate the two uniform acts.

Psychological egoism claims that people always act to serve their own interests. This notion is projected on all deeds even acts that may be deemed charitable.  Another view of psychological egoism is that self interests motivate people to act. Ethical egoism deviates slightly from psychological egoism by outlining that people ought to act and do what is in line with their own self interest. It also emerges that it is the love for self, which lies below both aspects of egoism. Egoism is love and desire to fulfill one’s own wishes and satisfaction. This may or may not be at the expense of other people. It merges that serving oneself is the primary and the sole reason for egoism.
