Oedipus Rex is a play about the tragedy that befell Greek during the early ages of antiquity. The play is based on a Greek mythology. With Sophocles awareness that the audience is well informed of the story, he takes advantage of this foreknowledge in the creation of a number of situations in which verbal and dramatic irony have been given a lot of emphasis. Through this utilization of irony, Sophocles has managed to tell a well conversant story without necessarily having to retell it bit by bit. In fact, the author has managed to intrigue the readers till the end of the play despite their cognizant of the general storyline of the book.  An example of this irony is when Oedipus pronounces his curse on the kings murdered at the start of the play, “But my curse be on the one who did this, whether he is alone Or conceals his share in it with others. Let him be free of no misery if he share my house Or sit at my hearth and I have knowledge of it” (Sophocles 14).  In the pronunciation of this curse, Oedipus has already passed a judgment on himself and thus foreshadowing most of the events that are expected to unfold.
