Introduction

As nature puts it, the human race is a social being. As a matter of fact, life revolves around interacting and exchanging ideas. It is due to this natural force that the world has grown into a communication competitive globe with the ever increasing social networks. The global communication system has led to hundreds and thousands of friends linking to every individual through social networks. With the current 200 million users of Facebook while Twitter and LinkedIn serves 32.1 million and 26million people respectively, the levels of interactions are approaching alarming levels in the corporate world (Vega-Redondo, 2009). The sky high number of users that have been registered by the leading social networks has lead to ‘double-edged sword effects’ in organizations. The advantages and disadvantages that arise from the usage of social networks at the work place remains a dilemma for the managers to solve. It is from this perspective that this paper argues for and against the use of social networks by the employees at the workplace.
