Ethnography
Introduction
For the final ethnography project, I conducted studies on the conversations held between friends during two separate informal dinners held at a Korean restraint, which I also participated in. The dinners took place in the evening after class but on entirely different dates, with the first held on February 20th and the other on the 2nd of April, 2011. The first recording was done with Korean friends, Seho and Jungsuk, the conversation centered on the school courses we were all taking before the subject turned to boy talk about girls. The second recording was done with my two Korean friends; Sungho and Jaeun. The two different recordings provided interesting views on the similarities and the differences between them, and comparisons and contrasts between them will be discussed in this paper.
Field Notes: Similarities and Differences
For the two recordings, similar settings and time were used; both took place at a Korean restaurant in the evening hours after six oÂ’clock. Another clear similarity between the two is the fact that all friends were from Korea, and that all were of a similar age, between 20 to 22 years of age. All of the involved friends were majoring in business, which also influenced the conversations. The first recording started off with conversation on school courses, a topic we could all identify with, which participation from all of us. Some of the topics that came up between Sungho and Jaeun after the first conversation about movies, centered on the courses they were taking in college (refer to field notes). I noticed that individuals do not easily participate in conversations about topics they do not understand or which they do not like. Such individuals would tend to want to change the topics to more neutral ones or one which they could all share. During the talk about accounting Seho, did not talk a lot and attempted to change the conversation, and when the talk turned to mathematics, he did participate a lot with Jungsuk taking a back seat (field note 1).
