Peer review definition and the effects of poor literature review to the credibility of a study.

Peer review refer to the independent evaluation of any form of creative work or academic writings by third parties usually practicing in the same field (hence the name peer since the reviewers are peers in a certain field) with an aim to enhance and maintain quality of the work in that particular field. Peer reviews are based on the simple concept that large and diverse groups of people have the capability to objectively examine a particular piece of work. This objective analysis is seen as the possible way to control the products in a particular line by ensuring that anything that is not considered fit is not directed to the public consumption.

A study that fails to critically review the existing literature is not considered a credible study. This is because failure to review the existing literature means that the author does not recognize the efforts of peers in the field who had made positive contribution towards the topic. It may also mean that the study may be covering topics that has already been aIDressed and is therefore repetitive hence redundant. Worse still, failure to review existing literature can be used to mean that a particular piece of work does not aID any new meaning to the topic as it only covers what was already covered by earlier writers. Failure to review literature also limits the depth of knowledge of an author especially due to the fact that the author only writes from his perceived angle of knowledge towards the topic. This makes the work to fail in objectivity.
