Domestic Violence and Rape

Topic: Domestic Violence and Rape

Attending to rape cases and rape victims proves to be one of the toughest experiences that many doctors and psychologists have to deal with in their line of duty. Rape victims have to be handled with a lot of care as the initial treatments determine much of how they will recover from this horrifying experience. Most of the victims of rape shy away from reporting rape cases out of fear, trauma or embarrassment. They therefore have to be examined carefully and interviewed wittingly so as not to cause them further trauma. This paper seeks to explore the symptoms that our victim of study might be going through and procedures that are important to consider in her treatment.

The signs and symptoms of what the client is going through

The patient may be going through a series of psychological symptoms ranging from anxiety, numbing of emotions, confusion, fear, anger, embarrassment, guilt and shame. Her immediate behavior includes breaking into sobs, trembling with shock and a kind of disbelief with dispassion.  Some times she goes into quiescence and tries to give very lifeless smiles which can be interpreted as avoidance reactions as if she is trying to engage coping mechanisms to control her emotions. At other times she is angry and tries to avoid any contact by displacing this anger to the members of staff in the hospital while at the same time fear will not allow her to have the nurses leave her alone in her room. She seems to posses a form of phobia about the environment which is evident in the frequent movements that she makes.
