Death of a Warrior, street life in Miami

The story of Jarvis Hilbert is a sad one that reflects the life of many young boys in the city. In the young boy‘s life, as in the case of many within the city, the allure of making money is what finally led to his death.  Many of the young boys as exemplified by his friends face temptations of, easy money presented to them by drug sellers (Korten, 1999).  Without many easier options for making an income and with others having family problems and facing tough economic situations as the case of Eva Hilbert, many turn to the streets to provide for themselves and their families. His story is a reflection of the cityÂ’s legacy in the murder of children and teenagers, who caught up with the raging violence fuelled by drug wars, end up in death. With 446 such deaths recorded from the period between 1980 and June 1998 (Korten, 1999).

Christmas season is usually a time to celebrate but in this case it is the season linked with increase in crime rates and resulting violence (Korten, 1999). The more money made during this season, is what makes Jarvis stay working all night.

Without the presence of a father, the elder brother named Robinson became primary role model in his life. With irrational actions of his brother, the young Jarvis certainly did not learn the value of making the right decisions in life. There one lesson he learnt, the two family heads – that living to see next day was not a guarantee in life (Korten, 1999).  His father perished in jail serving twenty years for the serious crime of armed robbery while the elder brother was also serving twenty four years for shooting.  Living life on the edge, with all actions done without prior concern for the resulting consequences, is one major mistake he borrowed from his role models and further reenacted together with peers. A Young Man named Loco, a member of the warriors, interviewed by Korten (1999) stated that “it brought us all (the warriors) together, made us closer” (p. 2). The death to them is not seen a result of his way of life, but just the reality that they needed to be closer.
