In Greek fifth century BCE the culture comprised mainly of public speaking. The ability to eloquently put oneÂ’s thought into word and argue successfully was consideration for one to be a successful public personality. Most of the people in Greeks during this period, watched plays in the theaters as the costs to circulate the plays was prohibitive. Originally the plays comprised of an actor and a chorus. The playwrights then expanded this to include more actors and the chorus became less important. They playwrights taught the actors orally the plays scripts, music and the movements. The Greek tragedies were supposed to engage the entire society on issues of culture, religion and also provided comic relief. The playwrights used to present their plays in an annual competition and winners were rewarded. Their plays which were also referred to as the Greek tragedies were mostly political satires and their themes were often about the ills of their governing system referred to as polis. That is a governmental system of a city state. The plays were considered a true reflection of their culture and religion. Socrates and Aristotle argue that philosophical scholars were learning philosophy for the purpose of gaining self knowledge through understanding and discovery of absolute truth and reality.  Therefore the philosophical teachings at the time used to serve the same purpose goals as those of the playwrights. The plays at this time were not only used to provide comic relief but also taught the masses on the issues relating to their culture religion and leadership. In other word they provided the realities of the day. The philosophers viewed the works of the playwrights such as Aristophanes as having the intention of provision of comic relief .Such playwrights were able to aIDress  societal and cultural changes  Through mocking the leadership through satire. While at the same time   aIDressing sensitive issues such as homosexuality.  They also used satire to question the origins of Greek mythology and critique fellow scholars and their works. However philosophers such as Socrates thought that philosophy had a much higher purpose like that of pursuing wisdom and the truth (Allan, 2002).
