Barbaric Makah Whale Hunting

Barbaric Makah Whale Hunting

Introduction

Makah is one of the minority tribes in America. Due to the nature of minority, they receive constitutional protection under the American constitution. Some of the privileges it has enjoyed in preserving its culture are through whales hunting. This was established in 1985 when a five year term treaty was signed implementing the whale hunting. However, various reactions have emerged following the signing of the treaty. Anti-whaling hunting has argued on the effects the treaty has concerning the population of whales. As much as the treaty was signed to preserve the cultures of the minority Indian tribe and have food, it has caused more harm to the environment than the desired good. This essay will focus on the reasons why Makah Indian tribe should not be allowed to hunt for whales in preserving their culture. Since the expiry of the treaty, the tribe has been surviving without whales; it therefore makes no different to them when the hunting is ban. The article will also explore some of the dilemmas of hunting for whales and the underlying challenges to the effects. However, my viewpoint is that whales hunting by Makah should be abolished.
