History of the Sport
The history of this sport is traced back to the miIDle of the eighteenth century by British military officers. However, the roots of the sport are traced back to the children game which was called shuttlecock and battledore where two players were supposed to use rackets to hit a shuttlecock back and forth. The Indians called the game POONA and it is from this that the British army took this version back to their country when they left India in the 1860s (Grice 98). The military officers introduced the game to their pals but the game was officially launched in the party held by the Duke of Beaufort at his home in Badminton located in Gloucestershire. During this time, the game had not been given a name but was generally referred to as “The Game of Badminton” and it is from this that Badminton became the games official name.
Till the late 1880s, badminton was played in England using the rules that had been inherited from India. However, in relation to the Englishman viewpoints, these rules were very confusing and very contradicting. This led to the formation of Bath Badminton Club made up of badminton players made standard rules of the game that would be applicable to the English. The badminton association of England was formed in 1895 which took over from the Bath Badminton Club. This new group made and came up with new rules of the game which are applicable and govern the sport throughout the world(Bloss & Hales 94). The sport first came into action in the US in the 1878 through the Badminton Club of New York. In the 1930s the popularity of the sport in the US boomed as a number of institutions started offering instructions of the sport. A number of Hollywood personalities helped spur the fame of the sport.
