The book written by Eric Maria featured for young boys encouraged to engage in war activities. The boys could think that participating war was a heroic activity only to realize later that the intrigues encountered in the war were far from groaning someone a hero. They got to encounter painful moments as their friends were being assassinated while other got injuries leading to Acoma all happening while fighting. The fight went on till the last day where all were killed and only a single person was left in the group. The story is narrated by a young boy Paul whose four friends; Albert, Tjaden, Westhus and Stanislaus participated in the war (Maria 21). The war in Germany was anticipated by the young men was full of dreams of success in overpowering their war rivals. What was ahead of them was yet to be discovered in an agonizing mood which is an irony of their expectations. After the young men were recruited to the military, they were taken for training with a jovial mood. They had little understanding of what awaits them ahead or the magnitude of the encounter.
It came the time of war and the boys were taken in front as the preparations were being finalized. They were dispersed into trenches and while in the tranches, the soldier were heartbroken by the constant explosions that wretched the war scene. It was that time when soldiers realized the agony accompanying wars. Many soldiers were shot, leaving others dead while others surviving with severe injuries. Among the wounded soldiers was one of the boys. He was taken to hospital where he found several other wounded soldiers nursing injuries. Some of these soldiers had to undergo surgery with their body altered to give them a chance to survive.
